A Brief History of Botox®

Botox® was first used experimentally in the nineteen sixties for treatment of certain neurological disorders. FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) approved Botox® for treatment of certain eye disorders, including uncontrollable blinking and crossed eyes caused by eye muscles, in 1989. Some eleven years later Botox® was approved by the FDA for treatment of sever muscle contractions in the neck and shoulder area. The muscle relaxing properties of Botox® make this drug a perfect remedy for people who have had to live with such debilitating conditions. The use of Botox® cosmetic was indeed discovered by accident when patient ecstatically discovered that Botox® injections around their eyes also provided a smoothing effect and softened their facial wrinkles. Finally in 2001 Health Canada approved Botox® for treatment of frown lines. (Botox® has been approved in Canada for treatment of overactive muscles since 1990). In 2002 Botox® was indicated by FDA for reduction of facial wrinkles (frown lines) with the recognition that the softening effects of Botox® effects were lasting for up to four months on average.

Botox® is currently under review for a variety of other cosmetic and therapeutic treatments. Some of these include Botox® injection for treatment of migraine headaches, and cerebral palsy.
