Toronto Botox® Frequently Asked Questions

What is Botox®?
Botox® is a purified protein produced by a bacterium call Clostridium botulinum; it works by reducing the muscles' ability to contract. In tiny amounts, Botox Cosmetic™ injection will relax muscles leading to softening of expression lines.

What are the effects of Botox®?

Botox® weakens the muscles in which it is injected. In doing so, facial lines and wrinkles become less pronounced. The lines seem to disappear or diminish dramatically. It should be noted that it takes Botox® several days to achieve its full effects.

How is Botox Cosmetic™ injected?
Botox® will be injected directly into the muscle responsible for causing the lines that are being treated. To minimize chances of any side effects, it is important for a skilled dermatologist to decide which muscles should be targeted.

Do Botox® injections hurt?
Because the needles used to deliver the drug are very fine any discomfort at the site of injections will be minimal and can be alleviated with topical anaesthetics.

Is there any danger of botulism from Botox Cosmetic™?
No, botulism is caused by very large doses typically 100 or more times that injected during a botox treatment. Given by a trained dermatologist in the correct dosage, there is no danger of botulism from BOTOX Cosmetic™.

How long will the effects of Toronto Botox® last?
The enhancement achieved through Botox Cosmetic™ typically lasts from 3 - 6 months. The effects of Botox® will wear off gradually near the end of this period.

How soon does Botox® show its effects?
Generally, Botox Cosmetic™ will start to take effect within 2 - 4 days. Its full effects may take up to seven days.

Where can Botox Cosmetic™ be used?
The most common areas are frown lines, forehead lines, and crow feet. Other areas include the neck and upper lip.

What side effects can be expected?
most common side effects are pain or irritation at the site of the injection and are not long-lasting. More serious side effects may be droopy eyelids. This risk is drastically reduced when injected by experienced dermatologists. Because the effects of Botox® are temporary, so are any side effects.

Are there any reasons not to have Toronto Botox Cosmetic™?
Botox should not be used on patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a neurologic disease.
